Periodontal disease is an extremely common and serious disease in pets. Over 70% of cats and 80% of dogs show signs of oral disease by the age of 3 years old. Certain breeds of animals may show signs of periodontal disease at an even earlier age. Not all periodontal disease is visible as a large percentage can occur below the gum line. The first signs of periodontal disease generally include bad breath, redness along the gum line, and discoloration of teeth. Other signs may include drooling, pawing at the mouth, difficulty eating, or bleeding gums. Advanced signs of periodontal disease include thick tartar on teeth, infected pockets along gum line, teeth that move or fall out and your pet may have difficulty eating. If not treated early the periodontal disease can allow bacteria to spread throughout the bloodstream affecting other organs such as the heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, and pancreas.
Dental cleaning in veterinary patients is performed under general anesthesia with your pet’s airway protected with a breathing (endotracheal) tube. Your pet is monitored closely under anesthesia. Pre-anesthetic blood work to check your pet’s liver and kidney function, as well as other parameters, is strongly recommended to ensure your pet is a good anesthetic candidate. The procedure involves complete oral examination, cleaning, probing the teeth, scaling both above and below the gum line with an ultrasonic scaler, removal of tartar, polishing, fluoride treatment, charting of teeth, and extraction of teeth if necessary. Pets also receive pain and antibiotic injections. Cedar Creek Veterinary Clinic also has dental radiograph (X-ray) machine available when it is necessary to assist in diagnosing certain diseases in teeth.
Cedar Creek Veterinary Clinic performs dental cleaning on dogs, cats, ferrets, and hedgehogs. Our doctors are also trained in looking for dental disease and trimming teeth in exotic species such as rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, chinchillas, etc.
